Leading with a Limp

Our local bookshops in Hobart are flooded with shelves of leadership books, filled with strategies for maximising your power and minimising your areas of weakness. Most of these books focus on a worldly view of leadership and at times an inflated view of yourself. This is the complete opposite of what the Bible teaches us. Instead, we know that we are weak and God wants us to draw from Himself and His grace for strength.

This week our 2020 Student Leadership team were presented with their badges in our assembly. This was a special occasion with parents, students and staff acknowledging our new student leaders. I had the opportunity to share about the importance of having a right view of leadership and that as leaders we are broken; we lead with a limp, and we need one another. 

I encouraged our student leaders to thank God that he has blessed them with strength and natural abilities. I also challenged them to think and name their weaknesses and consider how this may make different aspects of leadership difficult for them.

It was a privilege that I was able to share with students that it is our weakness that makes us more dependent on Jesus and also do the most to make him known to us. I shared with students the following excerpt from the book, Leading with a Limp, written by Dan Allender, which challenges leaders to acknowledge and embrace our weaknesses, for good can come out of them. Allender writes, “A limping leader makes Jesus known as they cling to King Jesus to lead, comfort them and to tell the truth.”

I encourage our student leaders to limp and fall forward into God’s strong arms of grace:

Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.’

Coronavirus and the up-coming Flu season

The Bible reminds us that through prayer and with thanksgiving, we can have peace in times of trial.

 Philippians 4:6-7 says “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”

Since the school term has begun, Christian Schools Tasmania (CST) and our Principals and staff have continued to monitor and follow the advice of the National and State Health authorities, regarding the spread and impact of Coronavirus…

Year 2 News

Year 2 have started the year well and the class is settling in nicely to weekly routines and learning programs and I am looking forward to seeing their progress as the year continues.

We are developing new friendships and finding out how to display the Fruits of the Spirit, which are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, self-control, goodness and faithfulness. Each week we take a deeper look at what it means to display these fruits along with how our saviour Jesus Christ demonstrated these traits throughout his life.

Year 2 are discovering how they are connected to the world by exploring Australia and further abroad. We are looking at how the original inhabitants of Australia viewed and depicted our nation through our indigenous-inspired artwork as well.

This term we are focusing on being curious learners. Year 2 have been thinking about water as one of our natural resources. We have been exploring the school to find all of the places where water comes from and where it may go. We have discovered that our school has drains that take away the water and are beginning to question where water might go after that.

Students have been very excited to learn about Auslan and have been learning to fingerspell their names. They are particularly excited to be able to ‘speak with their hands’ and can’t wait to know more about this special language.

Building Community

In Prep, Year 1 and Year 6 we are focussing on Building Community and we . recognise that all students can be active contributors and encouragers of others and thereby build community.

This week our Year 6 class joined with Prep and Year 1 for structured play. This has allowed all students to make connections or further build connections already established.

Amongst other things, the Year 6 and Year 1 classes work together on Technology activities and the Year 6 class will begin having shared reading sessions with the Preps.

Digital Parent Information Evening

On Tuesday, April 7 at 7.00pm we are hosting an evening to provide insights on how to raise healthy pre-teens in the digital age.

Come and hear guest speaker, Daniel Sih. He will be answering questions like:

• When should I get my child a smartphone?

• How do I guide their digital habits?

• What can I do to help them enjoy life away from a screen?

• And lots more!

Daniel has 15 years of experience working in senior leadership and strategic consulting roles across Australia and the UK.

This event is an initiative of our School Council and they are kindly providing supper. We are looking forward to seeing you here on the night.

Clean Up Australia Day

Make sure you check out all the action from Clean up Australia Day last week via our Facebook Page. We managed to collect many bags of rubbish from our grounds.

Well done everyone, on such a huge effort!

Student Data Collection

Each year the Australian government collect data regarding your child and their enrolment. This data is used to inform Commonwealth school education policy, and to help ensure that Commonwealth funding arrangements for non-government schools are based on need, and are fair and transparent.

Our school provides this data to the Department of Education, Skills and Employment automatically, but is required to inform you that this will occur. You can read more about this process or contact us if you have any questions.
