What is a Christian Worldview?

As a Christian school, we believe that Jesus is Lord in all of life, and therefore this impacts every part of our school life. This is clearly articulated in the Practice Statement for Christian Schools Tasmania:

“We believe the Gospel informs, impacts and ultimately permeates throughout everything within our organisation.”

At Northern, we are serious about Christian education, and we are not a school that leaves their practice statement in a folder in the staffroom. Instead, we seek to have a ‘biblical worldview in action’ in everything that we do. We try to ensure that Jesus’ love, power, and authority informs and guides all practice and community life at Northern. That said, at times, we have made mistakes, and we have had to ask forgiveness from God and others. These times have been a reminder of the grace that we have in Jesus.

‘What is a Christian worldview?’ I am regularly asked this question in enrolment interviews when I am explaining to future families that we teach from a Christian worldview. The word ‘worldview’ refers to the idea that everyone views life through a different set of glasses. These glasses affect how we interpret and interact with the world around us (National Institute of Christian Education, 2015). At Northern, we strive to be a transformation community where students are taught to view the world through a different set of glasses, with the lenses being the Bible. Students are invited to see and understand the world through the perspective of God’s truth.

Here are a few of the many applications where a Christian worldview provides a difference in perspective:

  • Technology: can become either an instrument through which we fulfil our role as God’s stewards or an object of worship that will eventually rule us.

  • The environment: environmental stewardship means we have a responsibility to the non-human aspects of God’s creation. Since God’s plan of redemption includes his earthly creation, as well as human, we should do all we can to live in it carefully and lovingly.

  • The arts and recreation: are understood as legitimate and important parts of human creativity and community. They express what it means to be created in the image of God. We need to develop critical skills of analysis and evaluation so that we are informed, intentional, and reflective about what we create, see, and do.

  • Science and faith: for almost two centuries, science has been at the forefront of our modern world. We must explore how we see scientific issues from the vantage point of a Christian worldview. An understanding of God includes the knowledge we gain through scientific investigation. With the lens of faith in place, a picture of God’s world emerges that complements and harmonises the findings of science and the teachings of Scripture (The Gospel Project, 2013).

We pray that each of our students will discover and understand the
God-given meaning and structure of the world, and their place and purpose within it.

Visitor Screening

Due to COVID-19 regulations, we are required to pre-screen all visitors who enter our school, and intend to remain on campus for more than five minutes. This will, in the event of a positive diagnosis of COVID-19, allow us to trace who has been to our school and identify potential persons who may have been in close contact.

All visitors that are on the school site for more than five minutes must complete our Visitor Health Screening Form at the office.

Parents and Carers are reminded to remain in their vehicles until 3.00pm before entering the school grounds to collect younger students.

If you are happy for older students to walk to your car then please arrange this to minimise visitors entering campus. You must then leave campus within five minutes. If you are wanting to speak with a teacher, please make an appointment or organise a phone call.

 

Prep Update

Term 3 is very busy in Prep!

In Bible, we are learning about Jesus and many of the things He did during his short time on earth. Last week, the students really enjoyed recreating the story of the paralysed man who was lowered down through a roof top into a crowded room to be healed by Jesus.

In Geography, we are learning about the places we go, and students have been creating maps to represent some places well-known to them! The students are thoroughly enjoying gymnastics lessons and spending time outdoors at Forest School with Mr Whittle.

In English this term, we are exploring Procedural Texts. We had fun making toast for recess last week, and making Goo this week! We are continuing to learn new graphemes to help us to read, write and spell words.

In Mathematics, we are looking at teen numbers and beyond. We have done some investigations about the mass of objects and making comparisons of heavier and lighter. Soon, we will look into capacity.

Towards the end of term, we will participate in swimming lessons and by the end of that, we will all be ready for a well-earned holiday!

Uniform Survey Results

Thank you for those who participated in the Uniform Survey. We had 55 participants and we appreciated all of your feedback about our current uniform. The School Council has recently met with the Principal to review our current uniform and to plan for the future. We hope to share with you some of the results from the Uniform Survey and future uniform changes shortly.

Parents and carers, especially those with an interest in Christian Education, are warmly invited to attend the annual Christian Education National (CEN) Nurture Conference.

We are providing the opportunity for 10 parents to come to this conference completely FREE of charge. If you would like to attend the conference, please contact us.

This conference is specifically for parents and carers, and this year it will be held at Launceston Christian School on September 4 and 5. Calvin Christian School’s own Bonny Moroni and Stelle Carmichael will be presenting on the topic of Teenage Resilience and Mental Health.
 

Footy Colours Day

Fight Cancer Foundation’s Footy Colours Day is a national fundraising campaign which helps kids with cancer. On Friday September 4 students are invited to wear their favourite Footy team colours, and there will be fun activities held throughout the day.

A large Freddo Frog or Caramello and a packet of chips - aka ‘Footy Food’ - is able to be purchased for $1.50 via Qkr! along with a fundraising donation.

From the Office

All School Absentees

For absentees please fill-out our Absentee Form OR email us before 9.30am.

  • An SMS will be sent to parents for unexplained absences.

  • Please ensure late students who arrive after 9.00am are signed in at the office.

  • If students are leaving early they are required to be signed out at the office.

  • A doctor’s certificate is required for more than three days’ absence.

  • Please notify the office before 2.30pm for any messages your children need before leaving school.
