Fostering Kindness and
Compassion in ChildrenI googled ‘bullying’ this week, and it came up with 321,000,000 results. This word was not prevalent when I was at school, but it’s now sadly a term that we know too well. God commands us in Scripture that we should be living lives that build others up, instead of tearing others down. In Ephesians 4:31-32, Paul is giving instructions on how we should live: “Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”
At Northern, our deep hope is that our students will be kind and compassionate. This does not merely mean that students do nice things for others, but they show empathy in what they do. Kindness and compassion are qualities parents hope to instil in their kids. However, achieving this requires more than simply asking your child to do nice things for other people. Empathy is the central component of emotional intelligence, and if taught correctly, empathy can go a long way in preventing bullying. Studies have shown that empathetic kids have better relationships and perform better in school (Gordon, 2019). The You Can Sit With Me initiative at Northern builds on Sophie Whitehouse’s anti-bullying initiative, which helps build community amongst all students from different years. It helps to foster empathy, kindness and compassion. “It means that a child who feels lonely or isolated or who has been a victim of bullying can go and sit with a peer who is wearing one of the ‘You Can Sit With Me’ wristbands and know somebody will include them, and welcome them to sit with them” (Whitehouse, 2020).

This year we have continued with You Can Sit With Me, an inclusivity program that encourages students to seek out their peers and sit or play with them if they feel left out. At the start of Term 1 and Term 3, students in Years 1 to 6 were selected as ambassadors for their classes. The students that the staff selected had continually shown how kind and caring they can be towards their peers. These students wear brightly-coloured wrist bands to signify that they are the ambassadors. At recess or lunch, students who have no one to play with can look for a student who is wearing a wrist band and ask if they can join in on whatever they are doing. The ambassadors simply have to include the students in whatever activity they are doing. When talking to some ambassadors, they had found that there are some times when they were often asked to help and other times when everyone seemed settled in their friendships. Not only has You Can Sit with Me been beneficial in the playground it has opened up the conversations and opportunities to discuss how to be kind and considerate towards others in the classroom. Since starting the program, we have also begun celebrating You Can Sit with Me Day and the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence. During these Days, each class has had the opportunity to hear, discuss and consider what they can be doing to make their communities nicer places to be. This year we were able to think about our wider community, and the classes wrote cards to essential workers and services who assisted during the COVID-19 lockdown. On Friday the 30th October, Northern Christian School will be taking part in Day for Daniel, Australia’s largest day of action to raise
awareness of child safety, protection and harm intervention.
On this day we encourage all students to wear red, and donations can be made via QKR! between now and Friday, 6th November. All funds raised will go toward helping this foundation develop free resources and programs for parents, carers and educators to teach children to stay safe. Students from Prep to Year 2 will watch the Early Years edition of Australia’s Biggest Child Safety Lesson, and students from Years 3 – 6 will watch the Upper Primary edition of Australia’s Biggest Child Safety Lesson. Both programs have been developed using age-appropriate and evidence-based personal safety education strategies for children. At this time of year, it is wonderful to see the progress that students have made with their learning, particularly with their reading and ability to spell and write. Students work hard on these tasks from the beginning of the year, however, often do not see the results of their labour until around the end of Term 3 and into Term 4 when concepts seem to fall into place. |

In Richmond, we will be exploring the historic Richmond Bridge and discussing things that have changed over the years in the village of Richmond. In History, we are looking at the differences between the past and present, and making predictions for the future. So far, we have looked at the differences in technology, communication, transport and toys. Our ‘Olden Days’ incursion will have us travel back in time; dressing in olden day clothing, playing the types of games children would have played in the past and making toys. |

We have begun learning about narrative writing and fairy tales. We have been looking at the parts of a story and how we can build a story using characters, setting and the moral of a story. We have looked at well-known fairy tales and used our imagination to change the ending of these stories. We had some very creative endings for Hansel and Gretel. |

Hats - Term 4Please be reminded that in Term 4 all students must wear a hat for outdoor play. Hats can be purchased for $9.00 from the Uniform Shop or via QKR! COVID-19 RegulationsParents and carers are not permitted to enter classrooms during school hours (between 9:00am and 3:00pm) unless signed in as a Visitor at the School Office. If you are dropping off or collecting your child during these hours please attend the Office first. All other parents and carers are reminded to wait until 3:00pm before entering the school grounds to collect students. All School AbsenteesFor absentees please fill-out our Absentee Form OR email us before 9:30am. An SMS will be sent to parents for unexplained absences. Please ensure late students who arrive after 9:00am are signed in at the office. If students are leaving early they are required to be signed out at the office. A doctor’s certificate is required for more than three days’ absence. Please notify the office before 2:30pm for any messages your children need before leaving school.
