Building Community

A few weeks ago, we launched our new Vision, Mission and Values for Christian Schools Tasmania. These last holidays, I have been pondering, reflecting and praying about how this will look in our everyday school life.

At Northern Christian School, we aspire to be a transformational Christian learning community. Last week, I was reminded again of what community looks like at school. It was a delight to watch students, on the first day of term, sprint into school to see their friends and staff. When I checked in with some of our new students, I was in awe of how kind, gentle and thoughtful some of our existing students were being. We have such a welcoming and inclusive community at Northern, and we should not take this for granted.

This year, we have been intentionally weaving the biblical thread of ‘Building Community’ into our classes to draw together meaning and purpose in learning. We know that God did not create us to be alone but to be in community with others, and God is building His Kingdom, His community, throughout the world. We have all been given gifts, not just for our own enjoyment, but so that, in turn, we will use these gifts to build others up and be a blessing to others (CEN, 2015). Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. (1 Peter 4:10-11)

Students are active contributors and encouragers as the community is built up. Some of the questions that we have explored in our classes are:

What makes a community?
Who is our neighbour?
Can we live without others?
Why should we serve others with our gifts?
How can we resolve conflict?

Our team of teachers headed up to Launceston to attend a Christian Education Network (CEN) conference with a few hundred other Christian teaching staff from across the state last Monday and Tuesday. We had the privilege to share our Community Thread video that showcased the beautiful community we have at Northern and how we intentionally weave the ‘Building Community’ thread into all we do at Northern. 

We pray that this term we will continue to be a welcoming and transformative school community of staff and families that work in partnership, where we use our gifts to serve God and encourage one another.

Year 4 Update

It has been a positive start to Term 3, with students returning to school with a renewed focus and energy to learn. This term, our visible learning focus will be for students to use rubrics to improve their learning. Students will be encouraged to refer to assessment rubrics and critique their own work to identify how their work is progressing and how they can improve to achieve a higher standard and quality of work.

Parents and Carers are warmly invited to Northern's annual Book Week Parade

Tickets are FREE but essential and all visitors must sign in at the door via the Check In Tas App. The event will be held in our Performing Arts Centre.

The theme this year is ‘Old World, New World and Other Worlds’. For the parade, students will be able to come dressed as anything relating to the theme (our ‘other world’ will be Ancient Egypt) or a BOOK character.

From the Office

NEW COVID-19 Contact Tracing Requirements

Parents and carers are now required to check in using the Check in TAS app before entering school buildings; this includes classrooms, the School Offices and other areas within the school campus.

You don’t need to check in when dropping off and collecting your children if you do not enter a school building.

If you don't have a smart phone, please visit the School Office before you enter the school to check in.

All School Abseentees

For absentees please fill-out our Absentee Form OR email us before 9.30am.

• An SMS will be sent to parents for unexplained absences.

• Please ensure late students who arrive after 9.00am are signed in at the office.

• If students are leaving early they are required to be signed out at the office.

• A doctor’s certificate is required for more than three days’ absence.

• Please notify the office before 2.30pm for any messages your children need before leaving school.
