Christian Schools Tasmania Family

It is a privilege that I have the opportunity at each student enrolment interview to share about how Northern Christian School is part of Christian Schools Tasmania’s family and share some of the stories about our schools. Are you aware that our sister school Calvin Christian School was the first school of its kind to be established in Australia? I am in awe of how hard and tirelessly our founding parents worked in the beginning. I still enjoy hearing stories about the ‘early days.’ Creating a school from scratch, without the expertise and without any support or assistance from the government, was the difficult challenge that faced these visionary pioneers over fifty years ago. Today there are eighty similar schools across the nation. 

The Association of Christians that founded Calvin Christian School was united in its desire to provide students with a Christian education, and the belief that parents, rather than the Government or the Church, were primarily responsible for the type of education their children received. The school, which was funded and built by the Association, opened in January 1962 with an enrolment of 77 primary students. Today Christian Schools Tasmania has over 1,000 enrolments. I found this video helpful in explaining in a little more detail how our organisation works.

What is Christian Schools Tasmania?
This is a question that I often get asked by Parents and Caregivers. They will sometimes refer to the sign outside Christian School Tasmania’s office in Macquarie Street that they drive past in ‘peak hour Hobart traffic.’ Christian Schools Tasmania is one association of four schools. All our Schools share a common purpose - to prepare and equip students for life by providing the highest quality Christ-centred education from Kindergarten to Year 12.

In 2020, Emmanuel Christian School and Northern Christian School will continue to work together to grow our partnership between CST schools. We are co-hosting a Digital Parent Evening with Emmanuel on Tuesday 7 April. The details for this are below.

Year 3 News

We have had an exciting and eventful start to the year!

One of the most exciting parts of Year 3, the first of the upper primary years, is all of the different programs and activities the students get to be part of. One of these is joining the older students in swimming lessons. We had a wonderful time going to the Collegiate Pool every afternoon. Some of the highlights from the lessons were going in the deep end, wearing lifejackets and jumping in, learning backstroke and the free-choice time.

Another exciting part of moving to an upper primary class is the two-night camp we go on with the Year 4 class. We are slowly getting ready, thinking about what they are going to pack, discussing the different activities and talking about who they want to share a room with.

As part of our focus on being curious learners at Northern, Year 3 have been thinking about how day, night and the seasons occur. We have been exploring the concepts through making models, watching videos and having discussions. Some of the questions we have come up with are:

• How does everything stay in its place?

• What would happen if the sun disappeared? and

• Does the sun or the Earth move?

During this term, the students have had a focus of looking at God’s creation and the best ways to take care of it. During the mornings students have looked at different Bible verses that talk about creation and God’s expectations of us. The first verse we looked at was:

And the Lord God took the man and put him into the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.

Uniform Policy

A friendly reminder that all students from Prep to Year 6 are expected to wear black enclosed shoes, such as a leather school shoe or sneaker. Shoes are important in providing foot protection required under Health and Safety guidelines and as such, all shoes:

• Must cover the bridge/upper surface of the foot;

• Must cover the full instep and be below the ankle (ie. they must not be a boot);

• Must not have soft uppers or punched holes, but a full leather covering.

Please note students are able to wear sport sneakers on a Friday for their Physical Education lesson.

We are aware that some students are already wearing predominantly black shoes. I encourage you when purchasing your child a new pair of school shoes next time that they are all black.

TransportMe App

We are pleased to announce that Parents and Caregivers are now able to download and use the TransportMe App for our O’Driscolls bus runs, driven by Ray and Mark.

This will allow you as the Parent/Caregiver to track the bus, save your child's bus stop and receive a notification when the bus reaches that stop.

Once the bus is in transit each day you will be able to find your child/ren’s bus and saved bus stop. This can be used during the morning and afternoon bus service. A user guide is available here if you wish to read more information.

Digital Parenting

Come and hear guest speaker, Daniel Sih, provide insights on how to raise healthy pre-teens in the digital age. He'll be answering questions like;

• When should I get my child a smartphone?

• How do I guide their digital habits?

• What can I do to help them enjoy life away from a screen? And lots more!

Daniel has 15 years of experience working in senior leadership and strategic consulting roles across Australia and the UK. This event is an initiative of School Council and supper is provided. We'd love to see you there!
