How can parents get involved?I was reminded last week, as I saw volunteers in the classrooms listening to students read, that we wouldn’t be the school we are without parents chipping in. We highly value having an active partnership with our parents. We believe parents have the primary God-given responsibility of nurturing their children to maturity and Northern Christian School grows out of parents’ vision and commitment to Christian education for their children. Unfortunately, it was challenging to have our planned community events due to COVID-19 regulations last year. We are so pleased that many of the COVID-19 restrictions have currently been lifted, which means that we will proceed with our exciting and fun events in 2021, and you can be involved! Last week, I had the opportunity to tour the new Multi-Purpose Hall. I can confidently say that it is a state of the art facility that will allow us to do so much as a school community. I’m also very excited as there is a commercial-grade kitchen in this facility that will help us host the events that we have planned for the future. Whether you are a new or existing family, I would encourage you to get involved in our thriving school community. That may be through regular service, for example, by listening to students read each week, or simply attending and getting involved in one of our events. No matter where you help, you will find a supportive and encouraging community for you and your family. As with all volunteer help in the school, a Working with Vulnerable People Card is required, and an online application form can be found here. Some ways that you can be involved in our community are: Parent help - we value parent help, and we know some parents are able to regularly help in the classroom or assist on school excursions. Please chat with your child’s teacher about opportunities to help. Book covering - at various times, there is a need for help in covering new books. Volunteers can come into the Library on Tuesday or Thursday afternoons between 2.00pm and 3.00pm to cover books. All materials and training are provided. Please contact Linda Rowlings, our Librarian, or leave a message at the Office if you are able to take some books home to cover. Laminating and cutting - many of our lower primary classes always have plenty of preparation to do for learning resources. Laminating and cutting resources at home is a way that you might be able to support the teacher. Please chat with your child’s teacher about this opportunity if you are able to help. Sport Teams - we are very thankful to have parents coach our 2021 School Netball Teams. This year, we are also hoping to enter Hockey Teams into the local Hockey roster. Please contact Samuel Whittle if you would like to help coach our Hockey Teams, or you may be willing to coach another sport team/initiative. Events - we have a range of school events planned for 2021, including a Bush Dance, Easter Activity Day, a Run/Walk-A-Thon, Athletics and Swimming Carnivals, Travel to Bethlehem and many other events. Please email the Office if you would like to support us with these events. The School Council are very grateful to the large number of parents that have put their name down already to help with events this year. Coffee Van - on Wednesday March 17, we will be having a coffee van at school from 8.00am. Please feel free to stay, chat and mingle with other parents while you enjoy a FREE coffee, which has been generously provided by our School Council. Last week, I also had two students come and see me to suggest that they would like the return of the ‘Milo and Biscuit’ days during winter. It was a joy to hear them openly and confidently speak about how much they enjoyed this treat in the past at Northern. I also encourage you to email me with ideas or suggestions that you believe will help build a stronger school community at Northern. My prayer is that we will continue to be a Christian learning community that is transformative and inclusive, where families are an integral part of our school community.
