You Can Sit With Me

As a school, we are continuing to focus on the value of Kindness. Each class are having discussions on how they can practically show kindness to their peers and others in the school community. Therefore, it is time to announce our You Can Sit with Me Ambassadors for Semester 1. You Can Sit with Me was introduced at Northern in 2019 and builds on Sophie Whitehouse’s anti-bullying initiative.

Staff have selected students that have continually shown kindness and care towards their peers in the classroom while others have been noticed for their encouragement and inclusion of new students in their class. At recess or lunch students who have no one to play with can look for an Ambassador, who will be wearing a brightly coloured wrist band, and ask if they can join in on whatever they are doing.

Throughout the semester, the Ambassadors meet to share how they are going in their roles and learn more about the importance of supporting and caring for others.

As a school, we would love to teach our students about faithful stewardship and support you as parents. Students love sharing with us the many great gifts you give them, often including expensive toys. When brought to school, these toys often become the source of distraction, envy, greed and jealousy leading to actions that are undesirable. Therefore, it is best practice to leave these at home, as we cannot guarantee their safety and protection.

Could you please partner with us and remind your child to keep these items at home, especially Pokemon cards. There are exceptions to this rule such as ‘Show and Tell’, ‘All about me’ bags and ‘Star of the day/week’ items. These items should be given to the teacher upon arrival at school who will put them in a safe spot until it is time to share with the class. They are not to be played with during recess and lunchtimes. Thank you for your understanding.

It has been a busy and exciting beginning to the year. After settling into new routines, the students are now finding their groove and getting stuck into their learning! It has been encouraging to see many students excited about trying new things and aiming to improve their understanding. One of the highlights has been starting the Accelerated Reading program, where students read books and take comprehension quizzes to demonstrate their understanding, allowing them to climb up levels. We're only a few weeks in, and many of them are already well on their way to reaching their reading target!

One thing that has stood out to me about this year’s class is their kindness to one another. When another student finds a task difficult or needs some assistance, a few friends are always around who offer a helping hand. This has been a great demonstration of our school theme for this year where Jesus tells his followers to 'Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven' (Matthew 5:15). It is my prayer that as the students grow academically this year in their studies and increase their understanding of the different topics in Mathematics, English and Science, they will also grow in their love and kindness for one another and that their light will shine brightly!
