From the Principal

It is hard to believe that we are nearly at the end of Term 1. It has been a joy to watch students settle into the school year so well, and see how our students are already growing in so many ways.

As we prepare to wind down after the end of Term 1 and head into the holidays, it is important that we remember, as a community, why we celebrate Easter. As you are aware, Easter is the most important and oldest festival of the Christian Church, which celebrates the resurrection of Jesus:

"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you.” (1 Peter 1:3-4)

I was recently reminded and challenged that we often only spend Easter weekend thinking and celebrating the resurrection of Jesus; instead, we should be daily reflecting on the impact of the resurrection, thus praising God every day for the precious gift of Jesus!

Our prayer is that all of our families will grasp the whole meaning of Easter and will praise God every day for his redemptive love that He has shown to us in Jesus! As you unwrap your Easter eggs, enjoy hot cross buns and enjoy family time, I encourage you all to remember to reflect upon Easter by reading the Easter story in Mark 14-16 and John 13-21 or watching the Easter Story as a family and praising God for the greatest gift He has given us - Jesus.

Year 1 Update

Year 1 have had a wonderful start!

It has been exciting to see how motivated and engaged the class have been in our learning activities.

In HASS, we have been learning about the natural,constructed and managed features in our communities. The students also learnt about how important recycling is in looking after these features. Last week, they had the opportunity to create waste management centres.

In Numeracy, we have been focusing on writing and reading larger numbers recently and learning the different ways we can model them using MAB blocks and ten frames. This included a number hunt around the school, where the students wrote down all of the numbers they could find and then we tried to put some in order.

Another exciting part of this term has been Forest School. The class has thoroughly enjoyed exploring the wonderful bushland we have around the school. They have collected bugs, helped care for the land and developed their teamwork skills.

I’m looking forward to seeing the academic and personal growth they will make this year.

School Photos - Monday 3 May

Class, individual and family photos will be taken on Monday 3 May.

Please be reminded there will be no cash option for payment this year, so please feel free to start ordering your photos online. Students will bring home a flyer shortly with all the details.

All INDIVIDUAL orders must be in by 4.30pm Friday 14 May.

All FAMILY orders must be in by 4.30pm on Sunday 2 May.

Any family who misses the family cutoff but wishes to still have a photo taken on the day will incur a $20 late fee and will be able to order this photo through the second chance system.

Toys at Northern

At Northern, we do not encourage students to bring toys to school as we can’t promise they will be kept safe. All students need to be responsible for looking after items brought from home, especially if they take them out to play. There is also not to be any trading of toys/Pokemon cards. Thank you for your assistance and support with this.

Term 1 Interim Reports

Term 1 Interim Reports will be sent home with students tomorrow. The Interim Report is a brief indication of your child’s start to the school year. A more detailed report will be issued at both the middle and end of the year. If your child is not present at school on Thursday, or your child does not return to your household that day, any remaining reports will be distributed at the start of Term 2.

If you have any concerns regarding the report and your child’s progress, please contact their class teacher to discuss further. Parent / Teacher Interviews are held later in the year after the Semester Reports are sent home.

Each year, In Australia, students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). The results are used to measure individual students and student cohorts against a National Minimum Standard in literacy (reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.

From a school point of view, these assessments provide excellent data that is accessible to teachers for the purpose of analysing student strengths and areas for further development. The data can also help to inform teachers’ own practice in covering the expectations for the Australian Curriculum.

The assessments will be conducted across two weeks this year from 11-21 May with the opportunity to catch up on missed tests. The assessments will occur within class time and will be supervised by our teachers. The assessment schedule is:

Additional Support/Student Withdrawals
In some circumstances, students may receive additional support where this is warranted due to special needs. In this case, the School will make appropriate arrangements. Parents also have the right to withdraw their children from the process. If you are considering this, please contact the School Office prior to the 7 May.

What is so special
about Easter?

There are so many reasons why Easter is a special time of the year for many of us. It is a holiday season and a time to relax and enjoy ourselves, and like Christmas, it is marked by special foods, family gatherings and the joy of being with loved ones.

Now, more than ever since the pandemic, these times to gather are precious and symbolise the hope of new life and restoration that is at the heart of Easter. However, amidst all the chocolate eggs and Easter bunnies that we will share that symbolise this hope of new life this Easter, there is one special food that points directly to the crux of why we celebrate Easter.

The cross in the middle of every hot cross bun reminds us that the central reason we celebrate new life at Easter is that when Jesus died on a cross and rose again, he paid the price for all our wrongdoing and offered us the hope of new life through receiving his forgiveness and putting our trust in him.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

I pray this holiday season is very special for each of you and your families as you celebrate together the hope of new life and all that the cross means for you. Have a safe, joyous and Happy Easter.

Kinder 2022 and 2023!

Our School is currently experiencing growth across all classes!

From the Office

O’Driscolls Bus Service - Moonah

After reviewing the bus service that operates between NCS and Moonah/Newtown, O’Driscolls have streamlined the run and removed some stops that were no longer in use. They have provided an updated Timetable and Route Maps (AM & PM) which will commence in Term 2.

Uniform - Rugby Jumpers are in stock!

Rugby Jumpers can now be ordered via QKR!. $70 for size 4 - 10 and $75 for Size 12 - 2XL. Kinder - Year 2 can wear these everyday. Years 3 - 6 students can wear this as part of the Sports Uniform.

COVID-19 Regulations

Parents and carers are not permitted to enter classrooms during school hours (between 9.00am and 3.00pm) unless signed in as a Visitor at the School Office. If you are dropping off or collecting your child during these hours please attend the Office first.

All other parents and carers are reminded to wait until 3:00pm before entering the school grounds to collect students.

All School Absentees

For absentees please fill-out our Absentee Form OR email us before 9.30am.

An SMS will be sent to parents for unexplained absences.
Please ensure late students who arrive after 9.00am are signed in at the office.
If students are leaving early they are required to be signed out at the office.
A doctor’s certificate is required for more than three days’ absence.
Please notify the office before 2.30pm for any messages your children need before leaving school.

Employment Opportunities

Applications are invited for the position of Classroom Material Design Technology (MDT) Aide at Calvin Christian School. The position is for 5 hours per week during school term time. It would ideally suit a retired or semi-retired tradesperson.
