Being wise with the time God has given us

Have you heard your child talking about ‘norms’ at school? Maybe they have mentioned the ‘lining up norm’ or the norm that when the first bell goes, they need to get a drink or go to the toilet, and when the second bell rings, it is time to be in class, ready to learn. In our upper year classes, they may have told you about the ‘whiteboard norms’ or ‘get ready norms’ where students unpack and get everything ready on their desk for the day in the morning. These small routines may not seem like a big deal, but they definitely make a huge difference to students' learning, and they are all part of how we teach our students to be wise stewards of their time.

At Northern Christian School, we believe that time is a precious gift from God. We want to use it wisely and teach our students to do the same. This ties in closely with our school value - Respect. One way we show respect is by being on time. For example, arriving on time to class shows consideration for the classroom schedule, for routines that have already begun, and most importantly, for others. When we are on time and ready to learn, we show that we value other people. It also reflects our belief that every person is made in God's image and deserves to be treated with dignity and care.

So, what exactly are norms? In schools, norms are consistent and expected routines that everyone knows and follows. They reduce confusion and help students know exactly what to do. For example, when students know that the lining up norm means they stand quietly in their class line when the second bell rings, they do not waste time trying to work it out. They just do it. This reduces something called cognitive load.

Cognitive load refers to the amount of mental effort used in a person's working memory. When students are trying to remember what to do, where to sit or how to get ready, they are using up valuable brainpower that could instead be focused on learning. When we have consistent norms across classrooms and the school, we free up that brainpower so students can think clearly, focus and engage in their learning.

This idea of cognitive load is supported by the research of Professor John Sweller, an Australian educational psychologist. His work in 1988 shows that clear and consistent routines reduce the burden on students' working memory. We have already seen the positive impact of this at our school. Classrooms are calmer, transitions are smoother, and students are more focused and ready to learn. These routines are also a key part of our explicit instruction teaching model. In this approach, students are not left to guess what they are supposed to do. Instead, we clearly explain, model and practise routines and behaviours until they become automatic. This includes everything from how to enter the classroom, to how to get out your book, to how to listen respectfully when someone else is speaking. It creates a culture of calm and consistency, which helps students feel safe, confident and ready to engage in learning.

At Line Up this week, I asked students to reflect on what their job is. We talked about what it means to be a student, use time well, and be faithful in the big and small things. God calls us to be faithful: to show up, do our best, and honour Him in how we use our time.

One of the many Bible verses that remind us of this is Ephesians 5:15-16:

"Be very careful then how you live, not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity because the days are evil."

This verse reminds us that time is a gift and we are called to be thoughtful and intentional in how we use it.

You can support this at home by helping your child build strong routines. Many of you are already doing this, and we are so thankful for that. A few simple things can help:

• Arrive at school on time, ready for the first bell

• Keep a consistent morning routine to reduce stress and rushing

These small routines make mornings smoother and help reinforce that being on time and prepared is important, both for your child and for others.

We begin each school day together with a short devotion and prayer, followed by a focused literacy block with explicit teaching. These early moments are a wonderful way to start the school day with God as a class community, helping students feel calm, connected, and ready to learn. While we understand there are times when delays happen, regular punctuality ensures your child can make the most of these valuable learning and community-building moments.

Parents and carers are welcome to attend our Christian Schools Tasmania Primary Cross Country Carnival.

Students from Years 3 - 6 from Northern Christian School, Emmanuel Christian School, Calvin Christian School and Channel Christian School will be gathering at Calvin to enjoy a day of cross country racing!

Students should bring the following:
• A packed lunch
• Water bottle
• Hat
• Warm clothes (optional dependent on weather)
• Adequate running shoes
• Full sports uniform

Join us at the Sophia Street oval on the Secondary Campus from 10.00am. Free hot drinks will be available from an onsite coffee van (for adults only).

Uniform Reminder

With the weather starting to cool down, please be reminded that students are not to wear tops under their school polo shirts that are visible.

If your child is finding the weather a little cooler, they are encouraged to wear the long-sleeve polo top, then add the knitted or rugby jumper, and then add the soft shell jacket to add extra layers of warmth.

Students are also permitted to wear the Northern beanies during Terms 2 and 3. Hats, caps, beanies, or jumpers other than Northern uniform items are not to be worn to, during or from school. Students can wear an additional puffer jacket over their uniform when outside if the weather is wet.

100 Nights of Reading

We’re thrilled with the progress students are making in our 100 Nights of Reading initiative! Keep it up – we still have plenty of books to give away, and we’re hopeful that many students will go on to reach 200 Nights of Reading.

If your child needs a new 100 Nights of Reading log, please don’t hesitate to chat with or email their teacher.

At our school, we deeply value reading and the lifelong benefits it brings. Our hope is that every student will develop a genuine love of reading.
