This is what we need to do…
I think we can all relate to those moments in life when there are tasks we simply do not feel like doing. Whether it is folding yet another load of washing to keep up clean with school uniforms, preparing meals, juggling work commitments, or driving children to sports, and other activities, many parts of daily life are repetitive and sometimes mundane.
It is easy to think that life should always be exciting and full of big moments. Movies, books, and social media often suggest that happiness is found in chasing after new experiences or being recognised for doing something great. But the Bible gives us a very different picture of what truly matters.
In 1 Thessalonians 4:11, Paul writes,
“Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: you should mind your own business and work with your hands.”
In his article for The Gospel Coalition titled The Joy of an Unaccomplished Life, Chad Bird extends that verse with refreshing insight. He urges us to make it our ambition not to be ambitious, drawing attention to the value of humility and faithfulness in ordinary life. As Bird writes, “Make it your ambition not to be ambitious. Stand out by wearing the camouflage of humility. Dream big about living small.” He reminds us that leading a quiet life does not mean lowering our expectations. Rather, it means lowering our eyes to see and serve those nearby, and to notice the humble daily acts that carry deep spiritual significance. Jesus himself modelled this for us. He was not born in a palace but in a manger. He spent much of his life doing ordinary, humble work, and he taught us that the greatest in God’s kingdom is the servant.
I have been thinking about this recently as I spoke with Our Head of Pastoral Care, Samuel Whittle, who has been teaching our students about this same idea. I imagine there are mornings when our Maintenance Officer, Jaim George, especially in icy conditions, may not feel like clearing and blowing all the paths around the school. Yet he faithfully does it so that students and staff arrive at a safe and welcoming space. This quiet act of service blesses us all and helps set the tone for the day ahead.
For our students, there are many things at school they enjoy, such as playing with friends, choosing games at recess, or participating in fun activities. But there are also things they must do that may not be their first choice. This could be sitting next to someone they do not usually play with, finishing a piece of work before going outside, or helping to tidy the classroom.
Mr Whittle has been helping students understand the difference between times when they have a choice and times when they do not. It has been encouraging to see them grow in recognising that being part of a classroom community means sharing responsibilities. When they work together, tasks are completed quickly and smoothly, leaving more time for enjoyment.
At home, this looks much the same. Children might not always want to pack away their toys, help set the table, or turn off the TV when asked. Yet these are opportunities to build resilience and character. When we choose to do the hard things, even the small everyday things, we are building strength for greater challenges in the future.
Sometimes life comes down to this simple truth: This is what we need to do.
As we conclude the year, let us encourage our students to persist and persevere, even when the task seems ordinary or unexciting. God sees and values their efforts, and these small moments of obedience and service, such as tidying up, listening carefully, doing work well, and showing kindness, are never wasted. Through these quiet, faithful acts, students are learning to serve others, honour God, and prepare themselves for the bigger challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Whether at home or school, these simple choices shape their character and help them grow into people who love God and others wholeheartedly.
